Norskye Byre
2 Guests | 1 Bedroom | 1 Bed | 1 Bathroom
Norskye Byre is a Scandi-Scot eco retreat on a working croft near Portree, designed by local architects and built for two.
Part of a croft being carefully rewilded with native woodland and kitchen gardens, this hideaway is intended to sit quietly in the landscape and leave you feeling properly restored.
Designed by a Skye architectural studio, Norskye Byre is generous with light. Picture windows frame the Cuillin ridge, the open hillside and the loch, so the view shifts with every hour and every kind of weather.Kitchen, dining and living areas share a single open space, centred on a Charnwood wood-burning stove for evenings in. Sliding doors open onto a deck area with seating, for a first coffee of the day or a last glass as the light goes. The bedroom is set apart, with a king-size bed, luxury bedding, a built-in wardrobe and a picture window of its own. The shower room has a waterfall drench shower with a separate handset, underfloor heating and a heated towel rail. The house is quietly efficient. Ceiling-mounted infrared panels, a thermostat in every room and high levels of insulation and airtightness keep it comfortably warm all year, however the weather turns. For those arriving by electric car, a 7kW Type 2 charge point is installed on site, available by arrangement. Please note: there is currently a property being developed close to Norskye Byre, approximately 40 metres away - see our gallery photographs. The development of this property is due for completion in Autumn 2026, and is mainly being carried out internally so there should be minimal noise or disruption expected during your stay. We have however reduced our prices, whilst this work is being undertaken, by 15%.If you have any concerns or questions about this, please contact us for more information.
Norskye Byre sits on a working croft at Peinmore. This is Skye at its most unhurried: livestock on the croft, a young woodland of 500 hand-planted native trees taking root, and a kitchen garden slowly coming into its own. The owners are rewilding the land around you, so the view changes with every season.Portree is ten minutes away by car: the island’s capital, with a painted harbour front, independent shops and Birch, our top pick for artisan coffee and pastries. Beyond town, the Trotternish peninsula holds some of Skye’s most dramatic ground, from the Old Man of Storr to the Quiraing and the Fairy Glen. Head west along the A850 and you reach Dunvegan Castle, seat of Clan MacLeod, and further on the lighthouse at Neist Point, the island’s westernmost tip. To the south, the Cuillins rise above Talisker distillery and the Fairy Pools. Closer to home, keep an eye out for red deer on the hill and sea eagles overhead. By day, the whole island is within reach. By evening, it’s just you, the stove and the hillside going quiet – the kind of stillness that is hard to find and easy to get used to.
"The accommodation was absolutely fantastic! Everything was beautifully clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the whole place had a lovely, cosy atmosphere. A big bonus was the fireplace stove, which was ready to be lit – after a whole day spent in typical Scottish weather, it was exactly what we needed."Lada, October 2026"Highly recommend! The house was very new, spotlessly clean and beautifully designed. It had everything we needed — a microwave, oven, pour-over coffee equipment, washing machine and more. The location is great too, less than a 15-minute drive from Portree, and there were lots of cute little rabbits in the field next door. We had such a lovely stay and would definitely stay for a few more days next time we visit Skye!"Tanya, Sept 2026
